Benefits of a Medically Supervised Weight Loss Program

Are you one of the millions of Americans who turn to fad diets for “rapid” weight loss? You’re looking for instant gratification, and it may feel great watching the number on the scale drop quickly at first, but we all know what eventually happens…

Your tolerance for the unsustainable diet wears out and you ultimately crash and burn, once again falling subject to the “yo-yo diet effect.” You starved yourself for short-term progress, only to gain the weight right back again. Well, I’m here to tell you that this habit is not only frustrating, but it is also incredibly unhealthy and DANGEROUS to your body.

Yo-Yo Dieting is NOT the Solution

Any sudden weight gain or weight loss can be damaging to your health. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that out of 485 female heart patients, the yo-yo dieters had very low levels of HDL cholesterol, the good cholesterol. The low HDL levels were especially severe in women who had repeatedly lost and regained 50 pounds or more. Other studies have found that yo-yo diets can increase a person’s blood pressure. Extreme weight fluctuations have also been found to increase the risk of gallstones.

Frequent yo-yo dieting has been known to slow down the body’s metabolism and inhibit future attempts to lose weight. This is especially true for anyone who repeatedly practices starvation diets. Though an extreme calorie reduction may result in rapid, temporary weight loss, your body could react by storing fat faster and more efficiently than it did before the diet because it is guarding itself against the next perceived “famine.”

Medically Supervised Weight Loss Promotes Long-Term Success

Instead of trying (and failing with) another yo-yo diet this year; why not get serious about your health by consulting a trusted physician who can help you achieve lasting results? Just as doctors have been very successful in assisting patients with lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, medical supervision can also help you lose weight and maintain that weight loss once and for all.

Medical Health Evaluation

Before you get started, it helps to fully understand your current state of health before beginning any diet or exercise plan. A doctor can conduct a thorough health evaluation that will include a blood panel, EKG, weight analysis, body fat analysis, waist circumference, and a detailed health history review. This evaluation is essential because it not only gives you details on your current health status, it also gives you a starting point from which you can measure your weight loss success.

Medical Monitoring

If you are severely overweight, chances are you are currently suffering from other related health problems, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. You may be on one or even several medications to control those health problems. As you start to lose the weight and improve your overall health, regular monitoring by a doctor can track these changes so that your medication can be adjusted as needed.

Individual Support – Personalized Solutions

It has been proven that individual support from a doctor can encourage a significant change in behavior and reinforce long-term success. This includes improved diet practices, increased activity levels, and ongoing weight loss management. Diet programs that include routine visits to a doctor can also provide accountability and continued support to keep the momentum going.
